How To Increase Your RSS Subscribers

Since I have been on a “How To” post kick, I wanted to continue on that and share my tips on getting more RSS subscribers.

Oh and this month was a posting test for me.. results coming next week :)

Just to refresh, here is the recent How To posts…

Getting Better Google Rankings

Getting More ReTweets

Getting More Newsletter Signups

Ok now why do you want more RSS subscribers?  Basically it is the easiest way to get arss subscribers, email subscribers, rss feed new post in front of your readers. Look at it like making a sale, it is easier to sell something to someone who has bought from you before, then it is to make a sale to a new customer.

RSS works the same way, you are getting a new post in front of readers that have been to your blog before and like it.

You can signup for RSS feed or email feed, I use both and I recommend you do the same since many people still don’t know what RSS is or know how to use it, but they all know how to use email.

Below is a small list of things you can do to boost your chances of getting you more subscribers.

Write Kick Ass Content

Yes, this is another place where great content matter, why would a visitor want to subscribe to read more of your crap content? Be unique, be fresh, be helpful, and be entertaining. The good news is you can learn to write better, it just takes practice to find what works for you.

Keep Your RSS Button Front and Center

Readers won’t subscribe if they can’t easily find your RSS button, no brainer right? Haha

So keep it at top of your blog in the header or top of the sidebar. People usually look for something orange, I used a green button to match my blog, but I plan to test different colors to see which works best. Try to use something designed that stands out.

Place Your RSS Button Everywhere

You want to promote your RSS feed everywhere on your blog, but don’t go over board with this.

A few places to use are at the top of your blog, in the sidebar, at the end of each post and at the bottom of your blog. I would use 2-3 of these places at once for best results. I have my feed in my header and recently at the bottom of each post and this has been working well so far.

Offer Email RSS Feed

As I mentioned above, there are still a lot of people that have no idea what a RSS feed is. But those same readers know what email is and use email everyday.  So they will be more comfortable subscribing to your email feed.

So make sure you offer an email subscribe button as well so you are not pushing away potential new subscribers. I have mine placed right beside my RSS button.

Once You Have Some Subscribers – Show It Off

There really is no set number to reach before you show off your subscriber counts, but I would say anything after 500.

Why do this? It is “social proof” that people like what you’re doing, they will follow suit and subscribe because they don’t want to miss out on what all those other people are seeing.

I share my numbers “all in one”, you see at top “Join The 72,000 Following John Paul”  this shares all my followers, Twitter, Email, and RSS subscribers.

This has worked very well, it gets their attention, which was my goal. :)

Just Ask!

Yes the biggest and best tip I can share, is to JUST ASK!

There is nothing wrong with adding a sentence at the end of your post or dropping a tweet every now and then that invites people to subscribe to your feed. Ask and you shall receive, right?

That’s it, some of my tips on getting more RSS subscribers.

You first need to decide what you want from your blog, do you want newsletter signups, or do you want RSS subscribers.

Focus on one and make the other available for readers to see. I believe focusing to much on both at once will hurt results for both in the end. Your readers will start to feel you’re asking to much of them, and may decide to do nothing.

Let me know what you think or what other tips you have that work for you. Just leave a quick comment and I will read and reply to them all :)

    Hey John,

I do like that ‘All in one’ idea. That is brilliant! I myself will have to add the RSS to the end of my post. I want to test that out. Thanks for the ideas.

    Chat with you later…
    Josh

Thanks Josh. That all in one has gotten many comments.. so so far so good.

At the end of the email… I had before, a then removed it, but added it again.. Testing to see if it will interfere with the RTs I get from that twitter button right above.. So we will see.

Pretty good tips. I have one question though, do you know of an easy way to show the number of subscribers you have?

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Yea. if you use feedburner they have a chicklet that will display your count.

  • http://twitter.com/WaynesBNP Wayne Howard

Thanks! I will check it out.

I like the last tip in particular John – just ask. Too often I find myself saying why should I ask – if someone hasn’t subscribed of their own accord, why would me asking make any difference. But I guess asking is down to building relationships with people – which ultimately is what’s important.
The tip on advertising how many subscribers I think is a really good one – maybe obvious? To me it is anyway. You can use your subscriber count to show off that you know what you’re talking about – it’s a confidence builder for the reader.

Cheers for these, I’m trying to build up my list of subscribers, so these are useful tips. Thanks man!

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Mark, I thought the same way.. why ask. But sometimes people just forget, it’s kinda like askign for a comment or RT, asking is fine and it’s a reminder to your reader.

Yea once your numbers get up there, then you def want to show them off, gives you credibility.

  • http://www.webmaster-success.com/ Kharim

Thanks for the tips man. I am going to apply these tips you mention for my blog :)

  • http://kathyblogger.com Kathy

    John,

I read your blog using Feedburner. Do me a favor and find a way to send me 500 subscribers so that I can put a nifty little graphic in my sidebar and show it all off. I wonder if anyone is selling subscribers just like people sell followers on Twitter?

  • Anonymous

Awesome post JP. I think it is important to remember to get back to the basics sometimes. We are all so caught up in plug-ins and pop-ups and other hyphenated paraphernalia that we forget about the simple things – like asking!

Nicely pointed out mate – and btw, I learnt a lot from you in relation the whole RSS subscription and social proof etc over the last few months – Thanks!

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

I wish it was that simple.. if it was, Id send you a 100 :) I don’t see that selling, but you do see many people fake the number sin their chicklets.. so thats kinda sleazy.

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Alex.. I agree.. the plugins and tools all work, and I use some for some things, but getting down to the basics, taking it back to the relationship “human” level is where your long term success comes in.

I’m glad man, that you have learned from the social proof. Like I told Kathy below.. I write about what Im doing.. and try to keep the normal online BS away from my blog as much as I can.

Have to say,, have been learning more about linking and article, recently with your blog.. so good to have that mutual friendship and resource for each other :)

    Bloggers helping Bloggers man..

Kharim..TY for the comment.. Let me know how you do with the tips implemented :)

I like the idea of combining the numbers. lol Slick. And it does work. So maybe I’ll do that since RSS subscriptions are still kinda low (although have climbed dramatically in the last month) but Twitter count is pretty good. Hmm. Yes, that sounds like a great idea. :)

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Agreeing with the others, the all in one idea is fantastic. When you see larger numbers it really stands out as “wow, this person must really be an expert at what they’re talking about because so many people are following!”

That’s not to exploit the nature of numbers but the social proof aspect of it really does go a long way to help ever increase your overall RSS subscribers.

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Yea I think if your honest with your numbers, then the all in one is the way to go. Why not share how many follow you everywhere, instead of just you RSS?

Since so much focus is on social sites, it makes sense to share those numbers too.

Seems to be working well so far :)

  • http://www.shoutmeloud.com/ Harsh Agrawal

One thing which I learned from my experience is: Feed button placement matters the most..
Giving an option to subscribe at the end of posts works the best …As when reader is finished reading the post he is sure of subscription by that time..
I also suggest along with Feed icon also offer subscription by Email..because till now Email subscription is more popular…

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Dude did you even read my post? lol Yo Re-Said everything the post said.

  • http://www.shoutmeloud.com/ Harsh Agrawal

John I certainly did. I can’t comment with nice tip and it must work… :)
    Anyways to reiterate:
    1. Add an option at the top to subscribe to blog. You can use Wp greet box plugin.. It detects the referrers and show message as Welcome Googler, Welcome stumbler an so on.. very effective :)

    2. Email Subscription are more effective than RSS feed subscription: Email subscription land into Email box directly and they have better CTR in comparison to
    FEEd readers….

Ahh!! M not writing any more as you have covered almost everything which one need… :)

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul
