New Twitter Design Review
I started this review in a good mood last night haha I got the new design and was looking around and it seemed to be pretty cool. Changed but not so changed that you would have to really edit how you use Twitter.
Well that was last night at 11pm…
Today with fresh eyes and digging in a little more, things are a big mess in Twitter land. ![]()
Now I use Twitter for marketing and connecting with new people and to find great info that I normally wouldn’t. I don’t watch the news, to depressing for me.
Twitter is usually where I’m at and see anything big happening. So my review comes from a marketers, entrepreneurs view point first.
The benefits for me when using Twitter was how simple things were..
- It was easy to talk and share with people.
- It was easy to check your dm’s for those few golden nuggets.
- It was easy to engage with people, 1, 2 or 10 peeps at a time.
With everything you have to do online as a blogger, entrepreneur… the new Twitter will have you bitching and cussing (I know I was) and wasting more time then you did before to do the exact same tasks.
End result will be LESS engagement because of the hoops you now have to jump thru.
The COMPLETE opposite of what Twitter and Social Media is about!
Now this is how I see the new design…
It seems to me that the people “designing” twitter don’t actually use twitter to Connect, Share and Engage with people.
Because if they did, they would see that these changes make trying to do any of those 3 things much more complicated than it needs to be.
Twitter was developed as a simple place to go and use to connect and share. Now everywhere you turn things are more complicated than needed.
Here are the Good and Bad as I see it – plus Video below….
The Bad:
- DM’s now pop open in a window… they don’t have their own page.
- In DM’s, you can’t just copy text, you have to click to open that DM to copy any text… super annoying.
- Clicking on someone’s name opens a shadow box pop up.
- When you want to reply to more than one person, YOU CAN’T. Once you click reply a pop up shadow box opens and you can’t scroll the page to grab other names to add to your tweet.
ex: When you want to thank more than one person for a tweet you can’t, you would have to do one at a time (I don’t recommend that) or copy the names to a text file and add all the names you want to tweet, then bring them back to input into a tweet and send.
- When you want to grab someone’s name to add to a tweet, you have to click and grab the link then edit the link to show only @name.
- If you just copy the name, you will get their name, NOT their Twitter name.
- Everything you do is a popup shadow box, this is ass backwards design to me.
- Your Listed count is nowhere to be found. Some you may have worked on for social proof is now gone.
- One of the biggest changes is the color choices. Everything is now black and white and dark grey. Just seems to be a BIG change from how light and clean the OLD Twitter used to be.
The Good:
- Pictures and video open up right in the tweet.
- Profiles are bigger and bolder, bigger profile images.
- #Discovery is cool if you use Twitter read news stories, plus they are location based.
- You have more page to work with. The new top bar is small and gives you more screen to view what you need.
- Showing replies/tweets with a image or video you share.
- The new Featured Tweets is a BIG positive for marketers.
As Hubspot mentioned..
- Embedded Tweets is very cool too.. helping you as a blogger keep more people on your blog and not have to go to twitter to share, reply or favorite.
My overall feeling is that Twitter seems to be trying really hard to make sharing and connecting and engaging much more complicated than it used to be… Big mistake!
