<p>It has been 2 weeks since I officially launched Twitter Dummy Guide, so I wanted to share my results and also some things I learned from my first product launch.
This was my first product launch, and I have to say it opened my eyes to a few things.
1-Launching a product is HARD and takes A LOT of work. I mean I’m not expert at launching a product, but I did spend about a month reading as much as I could on the topic.
2-The blogging community is awesome and showed great support for a up start blogger like me.
Let’s talk about the hard work, here is just a few things I did to promote Twitter Dummy..
1-Press release sent to about 100 websites.
2-Article sent to about 200 websites.
3-Submitted Twitter Dummy Sales page to over 200 directories.
4-Wrote a sales page
5-Finished ebook and worked on banner ads for affiliates
6-Setup affiliate system for Twitter Dummy
7-Contacted bloggers and marketers to get a JV partnership.
8-Wrote 2 posts to build buzz around twitter marketing
9-Drank more coffee then I thought I ever could
That is a small list of everything I did leading up to and thru out the launch.
Blogging Community Support
Let me start by saying not all bloggers were interested or even liked the guide. But that’s ok, the fact that they answered my email and were nice enough to congratulate me and wish me luck in my launch was pretty damn cool.
Having people that are #1 in the world like ShoeMoney, Darren Rowse, Chris Brogan to reply to my email directly.. and show support was a BIG eye opener. What I will say is work on the email you initially send, I think that is why I had such a great response from people I reached out to.
Bloggers That Were A Big Help
First was Kevin Muldoon at BloggingTips.com Kevin did a nice Twitter Dummy Review
I have to say Kevin was awesome, answered my questions and even offered me a guest posting slot on BloggingTips.com, Just a str8 up nice guy!
Next was Tyler Cruz at TylerCruz.com Tyler did a Twitter Dummy Giveaway Contest connected to his Twitter account, very cool idea. Again another really nice guy that was a great help.
Then we have Robb Sutton at RobbSutton.com Robb wrote I think the BEST Product Review I ever read..lol After reading it I was like “Damn I’m Awesome” lol
Robb was a great help and again another nice guy that answered all my questions.
Like I said earlier, not all bloggers replied or were willing to promote Twitter Dummy for their own reasons.
But a nice side benefit was even though some said no to promoting Twitter Dummy, some did offer me guest post opportunities, and some just acknowledged that they knew who I was and about my blog, from the comments I have left on their blog over past few months.
So that is proof that your “Quality” comments on other blogs do get you noticed.
How Did Twitter Dummy Do
So far I have made 4 sales before the launch and 53 sales after, about 30% of that from a few affiliates.
Now I don’t know how good or bad that is compared to most product launches, but I know for the time and work I have put in I am happy with the results so far, since I don’t have a big list to sell to, my blog is growing but I don’t have 10,000 subscribers to sell to, all I had was hard work and a few blogger relationships to help.
For anyone thinking about launching their own product I say DON’T lol it’s hard work.
Now if your ok with hard work, long hours, no sleep, then go for it.
In the end you will have your own product to sell for life and no one can take that away from you.

Well done, that's awesome for a new launch (I think)…. I am thinking of doing a product launch in the blogging arena but I don't have an IM blog anymore so not sure how I am going to get the news out….. anyway lots of research and reading ahead of me and if I can do half as well as you I will be happy.

I needed to read this John. I'm working on a project and am so frustrated with all the “did I miss anything” questions. It's nice to see some examples of your promotion and congratulations on your product.
I'm gettting back to work because of your last line: “In the end you will have your own product to sell for life and no one can take that away from you.”

Hey Mario, glad the post came at a good time for you. You will never cover every thing, so focus on the big things and get it done and out there. Trust me looking for every little thing to fix will drive you nuts, trust me, it did with me lol

Hey Tom TY for the support. Yes If I can keep it to 2-3 sales a day I will be happy. As far as another product, I think the next product for me would be a blog training course, but I have A LOT to learn first before I would even think about offering up something like that.
But in the next 6 mnths – to a year you never know

I'm putting only 5% of your efforts! Really admire you John. Already RT it to share with my pals.

You are inspiring me to work even harder. I hope I will be able to release my own product some day. 53 sound really nice like for a product lunch. It would be great if you update about your sales in a next few days.

Comming here from your tweet…great way you followed. I am still working on my own product. I hope the satisfaction following the launch will be enough! All the best!

Thank You…I appreciate that
February 5th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
Thanks Kre.. It def takes hard work, but in the end any sales are better then nothing. Just don't rush to release a product, mine was 3 months in the works before I released it.
February 5th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Great to have you on twitter
Like I said , just don't rush to release, make sure you put the time in. Once it is launched any sales will make the hard work worth it, and you will be left with a product you can sell for yrs to come.

John Paul,
Glad to hear about your first launch experience. It truly IS a LOT of work to do a launch right – and it sounds like you did a lot of things right, at least in terms of your “canvassing” activities to get the word out about the launch. Your sales page looks fine, as well.
However, I'm wondering whether you built a proper “Launch List” of people interested in your launch and used a pre-launch sequence, to condition and nurture your early adopter community enough ahead of the launch.
Based on the low number of sales results, I'm guessing that you did not. It seems like a very low number of sales given the high level of interest that people have in learning about Twitter these days. I would've expected many hundreds of sales or more, especially with the endorsements you mentioned.

Rick like I said this was my first launch so alot to learn. As far as expecting huge sales from peopel interested in Twitter, I think the problem is there are many many people selling crap products out there telling people get more followers on twitter. So it is hard to push thru that with a twitter book that talks about more then “just” getting followers.
But considering I came from no list to promote to, a up and coming blog, I am happy with the results so far.

John Paul,
Yeah, I agree. It is a very noisy market with a lot of crappy products by self-proclaimed experts.
I might suggest a way to cut through the crap. Survey your existing customers and find out what “jobs” they're trying to get done via Twitter; e.g., “find influencers and build a relationship”, “build a list”, etc. (whatever those jobs *actually* are) and then focus on differentiating along those lines.
It's always easier to sell to people who have a specific objective or “job to be done” than to a generic audience.
Anyway, wishing you the best of luck with it.
Rick

Yea. I know…But thanks for the info.
February 9th, 2010 at 11:25 am
Awesome John. That's a lot of funny, insightful, and discouraging all at once. I'm always surprised at how many bloggers think slopping something together is the way to glory and money. Quality is quality. Your product is obviously as well put-together as your blog. Bravo to you, my good man.
February 9th, 2010 at 11:43 am
Hey Josh, glad you liked the post and picked up on the humor
It is a lot of work, but it is well worth the effort. Your right, to many people throw some crap together and expect to make $50,000, just not reality.
Also thank you for the leaving a comment, and the comps, glad you like the blog.

Wow, thanks so much for this. It's really inspiring on two points: (1) connecting successfully with other BIG bloggers and (2) just being real about your results and your honesty in it all. Thanks for being so transparent. I worked as a VA for awhile and I'd say you should be happy with your results. They'll get better and better.
Very nice work. Congrats!

Tia thank you for the comment
I think being honest and transparent really is the only way to go. The BS will be found in the end, so why bother right?..
Yea I made a few launching mistakes, but I was still happy with the results.. all in all was worth the time and effort to launch a product.
