I been hearing a lot about twitter becoming more and more noisy with sponsored tweets, or advertising tweets.

I can see both sides of this argument and I agree with both sides.. I think..lol

Basically a sponsored tweet is a tweet about a product or service that you are paid to tweet to your followers.

I think this is a great way to advertise real time and reach your target audience. I think the problem most people have is more with the frequency people will post these type of tweets.

If you tweet out helpful, informative, and funny tweets that people like, then a sponsored tweet here and there wont piss people off to much.

Now if you are tweeting 5-10 tweets a day and 4 are sponsored, then yes people will get pissed off and unfollow you.

I send sponsored tweets out at one per day.  It is a nice way to make a little extra money on the side just by tweeting.

Right now there are 3 main sites that you can sign up with that offer twitter advertising.

SponsoredTweets.com

sponsoredtweets.com, make money with a blog, johnpaulaguiar.com

Sponsored Tweets is a new Twitter advertising platform that connects advertisers with tweeters. Advertisers can create sponsored conversations on Twitter. Tweeters can earn money for spreading the word.

All you need is a Twitter account to get started. Sponsored Tweets is a white listed Twitter application and uses your Twitter credentials to create an account.

I like sponsored tweets because they pay you per tweet, right now I’m at about $25 per tweet. I have made about $200 using them the past 3 months, not a lot of money, but a nice bonus.

Ad.ly

Ad.ly is an in-stream advertising platform that matches top-tier Twitter publishers with top-tier brands.

Ad.ly enables Twitter publishers to make money from the content they produce on Twitter by sending one tweet every day from advertisers that they approve. In order to ensure authenticity, every Ad.ly tweet is explicitly approved by the Twitter publisher. The publishers are able to set the price they want advertisers to pay and can optionally donate their earnings to charity.

I havn’t made much money with Ad.ly, but I have signed up a few referrals that make me a little money each month

MyLikes.com

mylikes.com, johnpaulaguiar.com, make money every day

MyLikes is a word-of-mouth advertising platform that allows the long tail of influencers on the web to create endorsements for products and services they like. They are attempting to change the way brand and discovery advertising is done on social media and other places on the web where influencers have a more engaged following, by letting the influencers choose and write endorsements in their voice.

By paying the influencers on a cost-per-click basis, we incentivize the influencers to make these endorsements as relevant to their audience as possible.

I am new to my likes, signed up last week, and so far I have made $6 in 2 tweets, nice start

My likes is the new kid, so far I like how they work, my only issue is not having more offers to choose from.

Overall I think done carefully, ad tweets are fine on twitter, and a great way for you to make a little extra money.

Above links to all 3 are my affiliate links, so if you click and join you will be my referral.

What do you think? Ad tweets good or bad?

  • I have been using SponsoredTweets and although I like the idea of getting paid for some of my tweets I wish they would present more opportunities. When presented with an opportunity I do make sure it fits within my other regular tweets and that they are not posted back to back.

I've also found that folks that get mad about others making money in any way on line are those that aren't making any money themselves.
  • I agree that Sponsored tweets is great.. better if I got more then 5 offers a week tho. MyLikes works great you should try them.

I also agree that the people that are against making money with a tweet here and there are ridiculous.
  • I'm not against it if it's done in moderation, but the obvious SPAM accounts created specifically for repeatedly blasting 'tooth whitening' ads and the like, are annoying. I use the Sponsored Tweets service, but my actual sponsored posts are quite infrequent as I usually only receive an offer around once every other week. I agree with the others though... not all, but most of the DMs are spammy. I'll have to check out MyLikes - this is the first I've heard of it.
  • Brian, thanks for taking time to comment. Yea I agree it comes down to the frequency that people promote ad tweets. Once in a while is fine. Yea most of my DM's are garbage, but everyday I find a handful or true DM's so I still monitor them.
  • I don't like sponsored tweets. Well actually I think of it this way: As long as it provides some value I think it's alright. I think I won't do it as social media is about being social. Putting ads in Twitter is destroying the whole purpose of it.
I think if you instead invest that time into building relationships with other bloggers than you will make a lot more money in the end.
  • Hey Julius, TY for the comment.

Yea I agree that if the ST is relevant then I dont mind them. Yes building relationships with other bloggers will make you more money down the road, but a quick income from ad tweets is nice to. If done right your followers wont mind at all and the relationship will still be there.
  • Hi John, I don't mind these too much but what really annoys me is the direct msg's I get on twitter, it's all spam! If there is a real msg in there I miss it amongst all the garbage.

Sponsored tweets are cool, just wish I could participate and had more followers. It beats adsense nowadays. lol
  • Hey Marc, Thanks for the comment.

I agree that the spam DM's get old. I check mine thru the day just so I don't miss a "real" msg.

You should try MyLikes http://bit.ly/dnsgqD Since how many followers you have doesn't matter to much, they pay PPC. I'm really happy with them so far.
  • Hi John Paul,
I think you are right that your followers will allow you some largesse to promote some approved products but I think there is a fine line that needs to be walked and that relationship (ie. I may tell you about some stuff from time to time) needs to be clear.....permission based otherwise it could be very damaging. Once trust is lost its hard to get back.

    Adrian
  • Hey Adrian, TY for tkaing the time to comment. I agree that you have to be as transparent as possible, to protect that relationship thats built on twitter. Good thing about ad tweets is they are clearly marked as #ad or some way so people know, hey this is an ad.

Also only promoting things you truly believe in or use is another way to protect that relationship.
