Twitter Marketing Tips
Ok I don’t have 1 million followers, I wish I did! The point is once you have a lot of followers, what do you do with them.
So what I did was I set up a experiment between 2 of my Twitter accounts over 2 months just to show how different the experience between a account that your interact with and build a community with, and a account that you just post to and don’t interact with. ![]()
I wanted to show that a twitter account with any amount of followers, 200, 100, 10,000 or even 1 million won’t mean shit to you and your blog if you don’t connect with them and build a community around your twitter account.
In This Corner…
One account was my main account @JohnAguiar that I am “personal” on everyday interacting, the other account we will call it @Test
At the time of my experiment @JohnAguiar had over 35,000 followers and @Test had over 9,000 followers.
Test Started
So here what I did os I used my @JohnAguiar account like I normally do, interacting, responding, building relationships and basically strengthening the connection with my blog and my twitter account.
Now with my @Test account all I really did was post information and some of my blog posts, but I never did any #FF, or really reply to any Dm’s or any @replies. It wasn’t set as a auto posting account, they knew I was there posting daily.
Results Are In
What I had with my @JohnAguiar account was a constant flow of @reply conversations and DM’ conversations and a healthy amount of RT’s of my posts.
Each and everyday their was activity and conversation on my twitter account and I admit I spend more time on twitter then I think is healthy..lol
But I guess that’s a good thing, if I wasn’t growing my community correctly then I wouldn’t have a reason to be on..right?
Now for my @Test account, there was pretty much no @replies or DM’s and a small amount of RT’s.
So even if you do have a million followers, if you are not interacting and building that twitter community then you are wasting your time.

John,
I too have my personal twitter – http://www.twitter.com/andrewwilkie – This like you I interact on, RT, #FF and cultivate.
I tell people that these are informational only. I set them up, so that my own personal twitter account was not a spamming stream and I could actually do my own tweets.
Maybe once a week I might go in and check the accounts to say thanks etc, but nothing more. Still can't let them go all together. The irony is my hypnosismarket account gets me higher up on a Google search for my name than anything else. Go figure.

Yea I def would spend more time on all your accounts. Trust me your other 2 accounts are a waste of time, if you are not spending time with them.

I have a 1000 or so followers and I did not interact with them after building…. the result is no one reads any of my tweets now…. So I could almost scrap them all and start building again. Even 20 good communal tweeters could bring some nice added traffic to a site. Thanks for the post, going to be giving Twitter a better shot this year.

Hi Forest.. I say just keep building and wait and see the old 1000 might jump in more once they see you making more of an effort interacting on there.
Trust me the extra effort on twitter will slowly bring you more traffic.

Hey Ben.. Yes if used correctly Twitter is the best social site to drive targeted traffic to your blog. Problem is most people don't make the effort, or just choose to spam twitter.

I have about 2160 followers and I can't seem to get past that hump in the road. I try interact with my followers but most of the time no wants to talk or either there isn't much to say. I am not even really sure how to get a good conversation rolling in.

Hey James. You have my Twitter Dummy Guide right? I can send you my Plan for adding people, so that you can add 300-500 a week then use Twitter Dummy to engage them correctly.
We can get you over that hump
Let me know.
June 24th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Sure that would be great. Twitter Dummy is great. I did actually gain several hundred new users after following those steps and I get more RTs as well. But the gains slowed way down and the RTs averages are okay. So I think If I engage more with my users, I bet can I get more RTs and traffic back to my site.

Yea it is all about adding more people that are targeted to what your blog is about, , then engaging them, RT there stuff, share your posts.
