How To Stay Motivated When Your Blog Is Invisible

Stay Motivated With A Invisible Blog

Ok, invisible is a little strong but having a blog that is not attracting the visitors you want will feel like it is invisible.

One of the hardest things I had to work thru was working my blog everyday in the beginning when I wasn’t getting the traffic or the comments or the social shares. I wrote post after post, I shared my posts and still no activity.

It sucked but it made me a better blogger in the end.

The real learning happens when things are hard, when you feel you are working for nothing. Being able to work thru all that negativity and still write posts, share posts etc..  will make you a stronger blogger.blog motivation

If you can write a post in a conversational style when there is NO ONE to talk too, think how good you will be at writing that same post when you have an active audience.

The good news is that the hardest part of your blogging journey is in the beginning phase, launch phase.

I like to say “blogging is like a shuttle launch, shuttle uses something like 70% of it’s fuel on the take off and the other 30% to finish the trip”

With your blog, it works the same way.

When you launch your blog that is when you will do the most work, like writing posts, getting readers, backlinks, making new blog friends and setting up your goals.

But once you have a blog rolling and full of content, traffic and your blog’s community is growing, things get a little easier. You will still need to work it hard, but more on a maintaining level.

Today I want to share some of the tips that helped me thru the early days of my blog.

Stay Motivated When Your Blog Is Invisible.

.

Appreciate The Little Wins

A successful blog has more to do with the small wins you have everyday then it does with the few big wins. Small wins keep us motivated and in a positive place to keep moving forward.

A small win can be anything… extra 50 unique visitors a day, 5 more comments per post, 5 more social shares, it can be anything.

Just realize and appreciate them, these are what will grow your blog.

Build On Your Little Wins

Once you have acknowledged a new win, you will want to build off that. Focus on other small wins to keep you motivated and working.

How about one post a week? Seems like a easy win for anyone right? Once you hit that, then build off that and go for another small win, like sharing your blog post on 5 new sites or spending 30 min a day on Twitter or Facebook.  All are small doable wins that you can reach each day or week.

The goal is to keep your mind in a happy place, staying positive is all you really need to work thru a invisible blog.

The more small wins you can put together, the faster you will see success with your blog.

Look Back

I watch the TV show Biggest Loser and I always say, “he/she doesn’t look like they lost that much so far” but then they do a split of them now and an image of when they started and you see a HUGE difference.

Do this with your blog. Sometimes we get so busy that we forget where we started.  For me, I like to look back on the early days when I couldn’t get a comment or a RT or share to save my life. I look at how my writing and topics have changed for the better. I look at how more focused my goals are now with my blog then they were back then.

You need to do the same, look back and see how far you and your blog have come.

Why Are You Here

My man Jack Zufelt said it best “when your WHY is so meaningful and powerful and at a mind and heart level, you can accomplish anything you want”!

A great way to stay motivated is to know exactly why your blog is here, why you want to have a blog, how you can help people, how you can make your niche better.

Once you have that deep down why, then it will be hard to get distracted on the down days of your  blog.

Get Inspired

Finding inspiration is another way to keep you motivated on building your blog.

Read other blogs that have the success you want to see, read books like Jack Zufelts “The DNA of Success” that I mentioned above.

Go back and read any positive comments or emails or tweets you have gotten from readers that appreciate you and your blog.

Anything can help and the more inspired you can get, the longer you and you’re blog will be around.

Welcome Failure

I know, sounds crazy to want failure, but if you are failing that means you are actually DOING SOMETHING.

The truth is, you will fail, you will fail a lot.

When you are new to something, the best way to learn is thru personal experience. Failure like fear can be your best friend, if you know how to harness it.

With failure you need to look at what you have learned. Then take that learning and try again and again and again.

The more you fail, the more you will succeed.

Don’t Walk Away

No matter how down you feel or how defeated you feel, do not give up.  The motivation will come back, the inspiration will come back, the blog success you want will come.

Time and time again I will go home kinda blah about my day, I didn’t get done what I planned, or something went wrong or whatever it is, and I’m just blah or even pissed off and you know what?

The next day I come in to a great email from a reader or I get a new client or I made a few sales. It all comes back around, so don’t let the down days affect you to much.

If you give up, you will never know what could have been.

I know for me, not know what could have been is a much worse feeling then trying and failing.

To be honest, the only real way for you to fail with you’re blog is to just give up. Even a bad blog will see some type of success in the long run.

And since you’re here reading this, then I know you don’t have a bad blog 🙂

Relax A Little Bit

Ok, we are talking about blogging, not that serious. So give yourself a break and relax.

Some things just take time and your time will come.

If you’re not feeling the blog, then just walk away for a day or two, if you don’t want to write this week, then don’t.

I would rather you take a couple days off, or a week off from posting then to have you write crap just to get a post out, or even worse, to quit you’re blog all together.

So if all the tips I shared above don’t work, then just relax and walk away.

Then come back and hit you’re blog hard again.

If you follow my tips above, you will take you’re invisible blog to a successful blog in no time.

Right now I am at the welcome failure part. I am feeling failure, but not ready to walk away. I think I’m blogged out more than anything, frustrated too. But I know where I went wrong with my blog, the question is will I be able to turn it around again? Only time will tell.

Thanks again John, much appreciated post.

  11. I remember when I started blogging (almost 4 years ago) and how hard it was in the beginning to continue to blog. It wasn’t easy to write posts and see that very few people were visiting and reading what I had to say.

As time went on, however, the traffic started to increase. Each traffic milestone that I reached helped me to continue writing more posts. It was as if the traffic gave me more energy. Having those milestones, regardless of how small, really helped.

The comments that followed the traffic, especially the ones that thanked me for helping them, provided the final life for me to continue.

Many people that start out blogging look at the popular bloggers and dream about achieving the same success, but don’t realize the work that is involved. When the success doesn’t come right away, they usually quite. Setting smaller goals is key to succeeding.

    Comment by Paul Salmon — April 6, 2011 @ 1:55 pm

  12. Paul I think we all start there. sharing and sharing with not much return in the short end.

But like you did,, just keep moving. Getting just one comment thanking you for doing what you do will motivate you to keep going for weeks.. really have to enjoy the small wins, since in the begging it’s all you have.

    Comment by John Paul — April 6, 2011 @ 2:19 pm

  13. John, this is just awesome. You made me sit and think about my blog on the very first day. Fortunately I didn’t loose sleep on lack of traffic cause it wasn’t my first rodeo, but it does take some energy to get over that first phase. I love how you explain it here!

    Comment by Brankica U — April 6, 2011 @ 2:41 pm

  14. Glad you like the post B.. Glad I could make you sit and think about the early days haha

  17. Hi John,

I am still focusing on the little wins, and that’s what actually inspires me. I focus on a few people, and the conversation I am having with them. I am not so much thinking about the numbers of visitors as long as I can keep a few important people happy.

To me, blogging is all about relationships and the inspiration is when I meet interesting people who keeps adding to the conversation and helps me grow and understand what it’s all about.

    Comment by Jens P. Berget — April 6, 2011 @ 3:40 pm

  18. Jens the great thing about blogging, is it is what you want it to be. We all have different goals that make us happy.

I’m like you,, I still push for the small wins.. I don’t think you can ever let that go no matter ho successful your blog becomes..

Al the small wins lead to big wins now and in the future.

    Comment by Brittany Rubinstein — April 6, 2011 @ 4:57 pm

  21. haha I think all our blogs grow at much slower pace then we would like.

Focus on those small traffic gains to keep you moving forward and keep looking back to were a week ago a month ago a year ago to see just how much your blog has grown.

    Comment by John Paul — April 6, 2011 @ 5:27 pm

  22. Hi John,

These are all great ideas! I especially like your tips to focus on the small wins. If you set goals that are too high and then you don’t achieve those goals, you’ll become discouraged and may even eventually give up altogether (trust me, I’ve been in the same situation many times before).

By celebrating the small wins, you always have a sense of achievement – you feel as though you’re accomplishing something, and this can make a world of a difference in how motivated you are to keep going.

Glad you managed to stick with it even through the mud! Now look where you are today? Everyone can achieve this same level of success as long as they keep pushing and striving towards their end goal.

    Comment by Christina Crowe — April 6, 2011 @ 5:35 pm

  23. Christina..TY for your first comment I think.. hopefully first of many 🙂

Yea, focusing on small wins is where you need to be, especially for people that normally don’t have goals before.

I have small goals and I have big goals.. I think you need both.. focusing on the small wins will get you to hit the bigger goals.

As a new blogger, things can get lonely fast.. so anything we can do to push us thru is great.

Exactly..I made it just like anyone reading this can make it, make it bigger then me.. all it takes is staying in it and working it hard.

  25. Glad you liked the tips Rodger.

I agree with all your added bennis

Only thing I would say is to focus on great content first.. and frequency second.

You’re better off to do one or 2 deep posts a week then 7 smaller ones.

This way you are first focusing on giving your readers awesome content that will bring them back and second your getting search traffic.

Doing it in reverse won’t work.

  26. I’m so glad I read this! That’s very encouraging! I’ve been blogging for about 5 months now, and don’t have the following I would like, but I know that in the long run, it is all about persistence. In the beginning I had days I had to walk away, hell I even left the blog for 3 mnths after only 2 mnths. But I cam back stronger.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone do that, but a small break is good,

You have to focus on the small wins.. that is the only things that will get you thru.

Definitely stepping outside of your self every now and again is important.

I agree, this could fit pretty much any goal you were chasing.

  36. John Paul, Thank you so much for this inspirational blog post. For the first time ever, I am printing a blog post – this one! I felt as if you were writing this one personally for me. I started my blog in February and have lasted through the desert through small wins. It’s amazing, every time I get discouraged, there is a little win that lifts my spirits. The wins can be as small as someone posting on Facebook how much my blog has helped them to big wins such as someone important in the tech world tweeting my blog post.

I loved your comparison to the Biggest Loser. You’re absolutely right, perspective is so important. As I look back over the two months I have been blogging, I realize how far I have come. The blogging learning curve is steep, but I keep climbing.

My absolutely favorite line (and there were many favorite lines in your blog) is: If you give up, you will never know what could have been. I haven’t considered giving up, but your blog reminded me I don’t know where this is headed so I need to sit back, relax (as you said, we are talking about blogging, not that serious), and enjoy the journey.

    Comment by Carolyn Nicander Mohr — April 7, 2011 @ 12:08 am

  37. I’m glad the post will help you.

I don’t care how small the win is, as long as it’s a win ti should excite and motivate you to keep at it. Some of my small wins in the beginning were nice tweet or a nice email from people that were just saying TY.

I know so many people that have given up on their blog or goal way to early. For me, the not knowing was enough to keep me from quiting.

    Comment by John Paul — April 7, 2011 @ 2:22 am

  38. Thanks, JP! I really needed that. Definitely bookmarked for future reference when I lose my inspiration. Thank you for all you do!

  40. You really dug into the meat on this one John, I will say my favorite point you hit on is appreciating the little wins. Nothing is more frustrating than when people dont celebrate even the small things, it’s good for the mental mind.

    Comment by Extreme John — April 7, 2011 @ 2:24 am

  41. Yea.. I took it way back to when I started lol It wasn’t pretty.

I left the blog for almost 3 months after only 2 mnths.. but Luckily I came back.

I still enjoy the small wins.. like I said in the post.. the little things you do are what build a successful blog, the same for the small wins, they build up to reach a monster win.

Just need the patience to stay in the game long enough to put a few small wins together.

    Comment by John Paul — April 7, 2011 @ 2:32 am

  44. I have 3 blogs on blogger, 1 blog on wordpress, 1 blog on sparkpeople, and writings on other sites that I hardly ever use anymore. The only 1 that gets noticed and commented on is the blog on sparkpeople. Not really sure why I bother with the rest…guess they are just online journals for myself.

After many years of blogging, I can’t seem to figure out adsense, or the many ways people have for attracting traffic to blogs. And at this moment my laptop is acting up so I can’t even sign in to link this comment to any of my blogs.

    Comment by Sunni307 — April 7, 2011 @ 11:12 am

Absolutely agree with you that one doesn’t really learn until things get hard at him. That is when learning something new can make the difference between quitting and reaching the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have noticed that on myself – when my traffic numbers for exampel are not falling down or even growing, I actually become less productive, thinking that things will get better and better without me doing anything. Wrong!

    Great job man!

I know that the answer isn’t ‘think positive’ or ‘keep on keeping on’ but at the same time, it’s so easy to just want to throw my hands in the air and give up.

  65. Great message, and boy, did I need it. Are you suuuuuure it will eventually go? I’m holding on by a thread with no readers, no commenters, no tweets. I will be patient. I am so not giving up. Thanks bunches!

    Comment by Sally Erickson — May 26, 2011 @ 7:35 pm

  66. Sally it will get better,, but that doesn’t mean you should stop learning and trying new things to get your blog pout there. Keep working and writing and sharing and the traffic will come.

    Comment by John Paul — May 26, 2011 @ 8:42 pm

  67. John – Valuable encouragement. I think bloggers should review analytics data for time on page, bounce rate, and exit rate and also track which posts generate the most comments in order to get direction as to productive subjects for future posts.

    Comment by Randy Pickard — October 13, 2011 @ 2:15 pm

  68. I agree.. but posts should stay on point with what your blog is about first. To much of one type of post is a bad thing.

Ex: list posts kick ass, but if 80% of your posts are list posts then that’s a bad thing.

Write what your blog is about, write what people like, write what will get traction in social media. Do all 3 and you will see the results you want.

  69. Thanks for that post, I am in the 3rd week of my blog, I have got
over 700 page views and just over 130 unique views.  Some
posts have brought them in but others have seen the tumbleweed
drift by slowly.  I am finding at this point that my best
marketing tool is Twitter. I am a wine blogger, so after I review a
wine I then tweet the winery and twice my review has made it onto
the front page of their site. One was a big Winery here in
Australia. The things keeping me going at the moment is when I see
people on my site live via Google Analytics after I have posted and
tweeted. It is a good buzz.  I have had a few comments on my
first post but none since so that is my next big thing, getting a
comment that is not spam 😉  Anyway, again… Thanks and I
    will keep hustling. Ken.

  70. Ken you are off to a great start and have a nice plan to sharing on
Twitter. Just keep it up and also share across FB and G+ and
connect with more bloggers and you will see your stats rise nicely.

    Comment by John Paul — May 10, 2012 @ 6:01 am

  71. Thanks for the reply John, I agree and am posting on FB, G+,
Pinterest and stumbleupon each post. Just seeing minimal impact on
these platforms but I think it will come. I am hoping that the more
people looking at my blog will in fact bring more people in similar
to a snowball effect. Again, thanks for the reply.

    Comment by Ken Lee — May 10, 2012 @ 1:06 pm

  72. Ken it doesn’t happen over night man. You have to put in the work
and have faith it will pay off in the future.

  73. Sometimes the hardest part is just showing up but I am confident that the hard work will turn into something. Nothing good comes easily.

    Comment by Joshua Wilner — July 30, 2012 @ 10:53 am

  74. Joshua. that’s the right mentality man.. if you put in the work, trust it will pay off in the end.

    Comment by John Paul — July 30, 2012 @ 11:25 am

  75. Thanks for the words of advise. I started building my blogs and was starting to gain some traffic. Then the kids got a little older and the family got busy and I haven’t been able to get my energy level back up to blog on a consistent level.
Maybe I just need to start again little by little.

    Comment by JasonB — December 21, 2012 @ 12:00 pm

  76. Jason, we all fall ff.. Good thing is the blog is there waiting to get back to work. Start slow and go from there 🙂

    Comment by John Paul — December 21, 2012 @ 4:09 pm

  77. Blogging is hard but for me a new subscriber that leads to
more traffic is motivation to keep Blogging.

Little wins can turn into big victories and that’s what keeps me
motivated to write new and interesting things all the time.

    Comment by Al Woods — December 21, 2012 @ 1:04 pm

  78. You got the right mindset Al.. enjoy the lil wins and build from them.

    Comment by John Paul — December 21, 2012 @ 4:09 pm

  79. 50 unique sounds more like a great month than a small win to me, haha. Thanks for the reassurance, I think there are a lot of us in this boat. Its an invisible boat, btw, great view of the water!

    Comment by Jason@MechaDigital — December 21, 2012 @ 4:44 pm

  80. Thanks Jason. We all have small wins at different sizes. for me 20 comments is a small win, for you 5 comments is a small win. Whatever makes you feel like you accomplished something is a win. 🙂

    Comment by John Paul — December 26, 2012 @ 8:44 am

  81. there’s a lot of these ‘I’m failing/have failed, keep on going’ kind of posts. I wrote three such posts myself. IS the industry in a flux? Will those that work hardest and smartest come out on top. Interesting movement…

    Comment by Ivin Viljoen — February 27, 2013 @ 12:01 am

  82. I wrote this post over a year ago,, so have no idea what people have been writing recently. But yes, if you work hard you have a better chance at succeeding then the lazy fuck that sits on the couch. Not a movement, but this has been common for a VERY long time.

    Comment by John Paul — February 28, 2013 @ 9:20 am

  83. Thank you for your inspiration! I hope to gain traffic soon because I want comments.

    Comment by Felicia Ford — March 1, 2013 @ 11:35 pm

    Comment by John Paul — March 2, 2013 @ 7:45 am

  85. Thanks John; certainly applies to me. WIth blogging, I’ve learned to celebrate the little daily victories. Each day is important!

    Comment by Jimmy Scarbrough — August 21, 2013 @ 6:54 am

  86. That’s what kept me going in the beginning Jimmy.. enjoy the process my friend.

    Comment by John Paul — August 21, 2013 @ 12:53 pm

  87. I think this blog post you wrote is fantastic. I too have been writing for a very long time. Sometimes I feel like yelling “echo echo echo”. Other times, well it is like a massive cha ching! I write a real estate investing blog. Now, paying GoDaddy every year seems a bit crazy when nothing is happening. But then, I have a guy come across my blog and buy a contract I had put on two homes for $11,000 cash. Do you think I am complaining about my GoDaddy fees of $24 now? No way! I am so glad you are encouraging people to keep on writing. I love that. Lets connect!

    Comment by Scott — October 22, 2013 @ 7:17 pm

  88. Scott that si aeesome man.. you have it in the right perspective. Yes there will be weeks and months that nothing happens, but there will be that one day, that BAM.. something good happens and makes all the work worth it.

    Comment by John Paul — October 28, 2013 @ 7:30 am

  89. Thanks 🙂 This really made me feel better . 🙂

    Comment by Kiehl Laura — October 28, 2013 @ 10:20 am

  91. Loved this post — my favorite piece of advice was to cut yourself some slack. Take a day or two off rather than post a crappy piece of writing. Staying in tune with your greater purpose, reminding yourself why you started this crazy experiment in the first place, is key to sustaining your momentum.

    Comment by Martha Brettschneider — November 19, 2013 @ 10:20 am

  92. TY Martha glad u liked the post.Taking time to walk away is a great thing.. sometimes the only thing that will work.

  93. Hi John, you are the FIRST person I add on when I joined twitter. I have been
blogging for years and honestly I stopped a few times not because no
one was reading cause I was overwhelmed by the memes I was participating
at and having to visit as many as possible when not as many visit me.I
am going to get back to it but I am having problem with my blog as I
have bought a domain with my name with google and then I cannot get the
specific help I need to get it open. It is frustrating and taken way too
much time….sometimes I wonder what I should do. Have you a wonderful
day….and you are SUCH AWESOMENESS. Keep up the grand work! hugs
    shakira

    Comment by shakira — March 18, 2014 @ 12:47 pm

  94. TY Shakira and I’m glad you are going back to your blog. 🙂

As far as your domain issue.. maybe it’s better to just buy a new one and use it on your blog.

    Comment by John Paul — March 19, 2014 @ 5:23 am

  95. This is very true. It can be discouraging when you first start out whether blogging, Twitter, or anything new. Everyone appreciates the encouragement, John Paul.

    Comment by Skip Prichard — April 27, 2014 @ 1:14 pm

  96. Exactly, it applies to it all. When your new it’s hard to stay motivated.. I know it was for me 🙂

    Happy to share my man.

  99. Great topic to tackle JP! This would be so helpful to my art blogging readers. That niche is a tough one to break into as a blogger. I’d love another guest post from you! Would you consider repurposing this for an artsy crowd

    Comment by lorimcneeartist — June 3, 2015 @ 2:27 pm
