I have a question about the SEO plugin and WordPress tags: should the keywords I plug in to the SEO plugin be different than the WordPress tags? Or, should they be the same?

Hi Laurie,

What SEO plugin are you using? I use ALL IN ONE SEO plugin. So for that I don't add keywords to it, I use the plugin mainly to change my title.

If you like to add keywords to your plugin then Yes, use the same keywords in your plugin as you use in your tags.

But the most important place to use your keyword is in your Title, and in your first sentence if possible, or at least in first paragraph.

Then use it in the middle of your content, then again at the end.

This way when Google spiders your site they will see the keyword in the title and in first sentence,, which is what you want.

If you don't use the ALL IN ONE SEO plugin, I highly recommend it,, its simple and Free.

great list John. I do my best to follow these practices on my sites and my clients. I am actually going back through a lot of my earlier work and making some changes to see if by adding and removing certain keywords I can see if I get more organic traffic on those pages

As far as going back and changing your keywords, I wouldn't do that..you will mess with any ranking you allrady have.. try adding keywords, or moving keywords into a better order.. but I would remove or change to much.

I was thinking mostly removing anything that I might have added that doesn't belong. I do not think I have any of those issues. I do think reordering and adding new will help some. -Just need to find the time for site maintenance!

But yea placing your best keywords first would help alot.

Great post John. I agree that a blogger needs to use that phrase smartly and avoid keyword stuffing. It is important not only to keep white hat SEO for search engines, but for your readers as well. I came across some interesting articles that could have been fantastic, if the author would not overuse a phrase in the text for SEO.

I agree that over using keywords makes a good article be a bad article very quickly. Especially since there isn't any benefit to over using keywords. top middle and bottom of a post is plenty,, any more then that and Google wont like it.

I feel it's ok to write post that are SEO rich on your blog and also write posts just for your readers. If you balance that, you will have happy readers and get luv from Google.

With the implementation of Google Instant search showing results as users type words, you want to make sure your targeted keywords are within the first 3 words of your slug, META TITLE, META Description and META Keywords now as well. This is a method I am starting to sculpt going forward now to try and improve my SERP.

So the order of placement for your keywords does also matter when it comes to SEO and SERP and needs to be considered as well.

When using All in One SEO Pack, makes ure you have the check mark (use tags for keywords and use tags for categories) this is best way to optimize META KEYWORDS automatically and you won’t ever have to type in the keywords twice (for tags and for keywords)

Yea using your keys in the front of your Title has always been best. This is an older psot, the tips still apply. The only changes really now are focusing more on 2-3 keywoerds.

But regardless, even if you do nothing different you will get seen, Instant sucks, and more and more people are seeing its better to type what you want like always.

What makes things hard is now all the 2-3 keywords volumes have almost doubled, so getting ranked well for them is very hard lol

But doing what you said def will help.

I do it manually, I’m used to it.. But your right, for people that dont want to, or forget to input their keywords, then checking both boxes will be a big help for them.

You mean on my sites? Or volume differences on yours. Mine are terrible, down 65% on my main blog and 60% on my other blog. Only my poetry blog is relatively unaffected by the odd shift in Google Search traffic lately.

I was talking about if you do keyword check on like Googles tool.. 2-3 word key volumes are much higher.

Like make money blogging used to be about a 40,000 mnthly, and now I believe it is at about 75,000

This is on all the keys i follow, they are all up. So now that you need to rank for the 203 keys, its even harder since the volume is huge, and Im sure the advertising for them is higher to, and the competition is much higher.

I agree, this is why I think Google Instant alone isn’t solely responsible for my traffic drop, there must be other factors I can’t determine.

I am so close to an A but I am happy with a B+ in my SEO report card. I guess that is a pretty good score since I have Blogger and all.

B+ is great. I’m not a fan of blogger since you dont control all the SEO efforts.. but it’s better then no blog

These are great tips. If you implement them, you will see an increase in your ranking. But of course, that still depends on how competitive is the keyword.

Yes you have to take action haha Even competitive keys will bring you success and traffic in time. Some keys will do that for you fast, some will take a few posts, but if you do the steps you will rank higher.
