4 Steps To More Twitter Traffic and Re-Tweets
People are always asking me how they can get their tweets re-tweeted and how to drive traffic from twitter. So I wanted to put this post together to give you an overview of how I get more RTs and more traffic
When I first started on Twitter with my @JohnAguiar account, I had the same problem as you, I couldn’t get an RT even with some begging..lol It took me about 3 months to bring together what I needed to start driving more traffic to my blog and getting more RT’s.
At first I felt I was doing all the things I needed to, writing decent content, I had a decent amount of followers, I was posting to Twitter on a good schedule and yet I was lucky if I got 5 RTs.

Asking Questions
I was questioning everything I was doing…
Do they not like my content?
Did I send out my post to many times?
Was my post worth RTing??
I went on for a couple hours and it hit me… I wasn’t doing anything wrong, I was actually doing almost everything right…Almost!
4 Steps To More Re-Tweets
Good Content
More followers
Engage with your followers
Build a community around your followers
I was writing good content, I was tweeting it out at the best times of the day, I was engaging pretty well, but I was lacking in the community building.
Quick Tip: Best Times To Tweet Are At 4pm – 7:45pm – 11:30pm eastern time
Most bloggers start on twitter and think they can show up a few minutes a day or even worse, they want to schedule all their tweets (big mistake) and think this will drive huge traffic and RTs, when all this will get you is the complete opposite result.
The more attention you give to all 4 steps together every day, then the more traffic and RTs you will get for your blog posts over time. Be There – Be Consistent!
Getting Re-Tweets Is 4 Step Process
You see doing any one of the 4 steps alone is ok, and will get you some traffic and a few RTs but if you are trying to get the most out of twitter and as much traffic back to your blog, then you need to hit all 4 steps combined.
Write good content.
Continue to add new followers each week
Engage with your followers, you need to “be there” to get most out of twitter
Build a strong community around your followers, RT their tweets, engage them, do #FollowFridays etc..
Quick Tip: Follow Fridays is the best and easiest way to get yourself in front a huge amount of people. When you #FF someone, they most likely will #FF you back and all their followers will see that, now multiply that by 5 10 40 people you #FF for… see the potential?
It takes a little time each day to be there and engage with your followers and you will start to see why Twitter is your #1 source for Free Traffic!
Does This 4 Step Plan Work?
Ok talk is cheap…Right?
Let’s see how well I have done following my own advice, and remember I’m not using any “secret software“ or any magic “get more RT’s website” all I do is follow the 4 step plan.
RTs 45 – 10 Effective Ways To Make Money With Your Blog
RTs 64 – Top 50 Places To Advertise Your Website For Under $25
RTs 24 – Breaking Into The Top 20 Internet Marketers Online With No List
RTs 39 – There Is A New Blogging Star Born Everyday, Are You Next?
RTs 81 – My Crazy Simple 7 Step Plan To Promote A New Post
I know what your thinking, “but JP you have 56,000 followers that’s why you get more RT’s” and in a small way you would be right, but…. I have seen people with the same and even more followers then me and they don’t get that many RT’s, I have also seen people with much less followers then me and they are killin it with RT’s.
The amount of followers you have is a very small piece of the puzzle when it comes to getting your tweets RT’d, so don’t let the fact that you only have 500 or 200 followers stop you from getting the most from twitter.
Twitter can be one of your best free traffic sources if you just use it correctly. All it takes is a little effort and time on the things that matter.
I talk about these steps in more detail and all my other Twitter Marketing advice in my Twitter Dummy Guide.

coool post, John,
and now I know what to do with my followers, lol.
I have started using Twitter about 2 months ago, and I'm still tweaking my overall style. I barely retweet my followers stuff, even when there's good stuff, but I will do it now, thanx to your reminder.
July 6th, 2010 at 7:52 am
Mars. TY for the comment. Yea you don't have to RT everyone's posts, but RTing a few of the one's you really like “hopefully Me Included” lol
It will bring you the attention of the people you RT but also your followers will like that you share quality posts that come from others.

Justin,,TY for the comment. Yea the big button helps..lol But I get some thru the smaller Tweetmeme button too.
Well as far as times there was an article a long time ago about best time to tweet,, and 330 – 430 was prime RT time, and I send it at 12:30 since most people I think are at lunch, and at 745 is good to reach people before they get offline to watch TV at 8pm, and 11:30 is good cause I get the east time night owls and the west coast people. This has worked well for the past 5 mnths for me.

I totally agree with your view on scheduling tweets…how can you schedule reactions? comments? Why should I listen to someone that is not even there?
July 6th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
TY for the comment. Exactly, scheduling a couple tweets is fine.. as long as you are there for the conversation afterwards.
July 6th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
TY I'm glad you liked it
I see you took my advice on all those ads on your blog?
Looks MUCH better.
July 6th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
I love how you get right to the quick and dirty. We've all heard that to get the most out of Twitter you need to “be a part of the community,” but a lot of people don't think to explain what that means. Great resource
July 6th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Jillian..TY for the comment
I'm glad you like my ” get to the point” personality..lol No need to BS my way around it, we are all busy, so the faster I can get to something that can help you, the better.

I think it's also important for you to understand your demographic as well. Having mostly (freelance) design based readers the best times for me are 9am-3pm. I think it has to do with the fact that so many designers are international and when I'm just waking up, they're going to sleep (or are in mid day).
July 6th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Melody..TY for the comment. I don't think the niche people are in matters, it is more about time zones. The times I tweet fit me and do well now the tweet that goes out at 4 has been tracked and confirmed I think by Dan Zarrella ” I think” that tweeting 330 – 430 is your best chance to get RTd so I send at 4 right in the middle

Hi John,
Great post. Makes since. I only post to a personal blog but at the same time I would like for people to read it and give me feed back. Must incorporate these steps into my plan.
Thanks for the tips.
July 6th, 2010 at 6:48 pm
Hey John,
Thanks for that tip: I will start using #FF.
Chat with you later…

Mike.. TY for the comment. Yea it all works for personal blogs too.. Still nice to have eyes on yours posts and get that all important reader feedback.

Josh..Your welcome man
July 6th, 2010 at 10:26 pm
Great tips John, the last one is the hard one
and about the time, I live with the different time with you, how about it?
July 7th, 2010 at 4:42 am
Latief.. TY for the comment my friend. I think you can still build relationships with your followers even with the time difference.. Do what you can when your on Twitter, I think what matters is that you reply to DMs and @Replies.. not so important that you reply within 10 min. I think if you reply when your on, it will stillwork for you. Also you can target your following to people withing 1-3 hrs of your time zone.
July 7th, 2010 at 4:44 am
Daniel, TY for the comment man. Glad you enjoyed the post. Yea I use scheduled tweets to, makes me more efficient, but at same time I am ON twitter to engage when those tweets hit.
So it's not a “don't automate” so much as it is, “be there to engage” thing.
July 7th, 2010 at 6:37 am
Oops, the “can engage by automation” was typed incorrectly, hopefully you knew I meant “you CAN NOT engage on twitter by automation”…
July 7th, 2010 at 6:39 am
I got you.. No worries man
July 7th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

July 7th, 2010 at 5:30 pm
Very nice post. It is definitely hard to get people to re-tweet your posts. Some people are lucky and get1000s of new visitors a day, they are famous though lol.
July 7th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
Craig..TY for the comment. Yea w3ith my tips, you don't have to be famous to get some decent RT's..
Just takes a lil effort.

John,
Good post! Engage with your followers is a must in order to build up a community.
Awesome tips and advices on Twitter.
July 8th, 2010 at 5:17 am
Justin..TY for the comment man, I appreciate it. Yea engaging your readers or followers is important anywhere, but even more on Twitter to stand out and get the most out of it.
Was on your blog, we need talk about some PPV marketing
July 8th, 2010 at 11:35 am
Great post, John.
Twitter is a very complex system that needs to be used right to get a lot of retweets. People need to realize that the content needs to be good to get any retweets, though, so I am glad you mentioned it. I see people writing crap content and expecting to get publicized instantly.
July 8th, 2010 at 11:49 am
Joe, TY for the comment. Yea Twitter is it's own lil world, done right you will get the most out of it, done wrong then you will waste a lot of time.
I agree, crap content won't get you anywhere on Twitter, or any where else really. Good content with a good title gets you half the work done on twitter, then you engage and build that community then your set.
July 9th, 2010 at 11:53 am
Hey JP, two things stand out for me most here: engaging re: “you have to *be* there,” and increasing followers. Those have proven themselves time and again for me.
No need to defend your following/retweet count. You are killing it with retweets. No doubt.
July 9th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
TY TY Tia.. Glad you see the benefit in BOTH Engaging and Adding Followers. It shows, Your getting more and more RTs Yourself.. You had a great teacher ..lolol

Sometimes I think people forget that Twitter is a community too and they see it as simply a marketing tool. You get back what you put in (that should be my manthra I think).
July 15th, 2010 at 3:31 pm
Yeea. Like anything else, you get what you put in.

Hi John – I agree with most of what you say.. except for the #FF. I used to do #FF and I get mentioned on quite a few, but I don't notice that it gets many more followers. Also I think it is off putting for many of my existing followers to see tweets that consist of lists of names. If you are going to do #FF I would recommend just doing it for one or two people, with an explanation of WHY people should follow them – eg they tweet interesting posts, they're funny, give great advice, or whatever.
Concerning scheduling tweets – I schedule a few tweets a day about the shirts I sell, but 90% of my tweets are real time, and in fact the vast majority do not reference my T-shirts. I enjoy tweeting for what it is and see it as a useful by-product that a few people might also be interested in what I make a living from. I always check out profiles before I follow back and if they consist of purely scheduled tweets I rarely follow back because it's a safe bet that the person behind the account is not going to be interacting very much. It's called a SOCIAL network for a reason
July 21st, 2010 at 5:47 am
TY for the comment.. As far as the #FF trust me, you should be doing it. Whether you do it for one or two or 30 followers. There many benefits to doing #FF. If your followers are put off buy you recommending good people to follow, then they are not followers you want. People like referrals, FF is you referring people to other people.
Schedule tweets are fine, i do a few thru the day.. but I'm still on twitter to engage after that tweet, that is what is important, live tweet or scheduled, long as you are their to engage.
July 24th, 2010 at 4:40 am
This is an epic resource John Paul, and if this doesn't convince someone to get the Twitter Dummy – I don't know what will.
Have bookmarked this post because it really is a great overall guide to doing everything possible to get some tweet'n love.
Thanks again for sharing this valuable post mate!

July 25th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Ok so where I've been going wrong is spending most of my time on Twitter in the mornings to early afternoon. I guess since I'm on the east coast that means most of my followers miss me by time they're on.
Time to get my twitter stream poppin' in the PM too. Good stuff John.
July 25th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
CA..I'm on east coast too.. I hit twitter morning, afternoon and at night.
But breaking up your time thru the day will get you in front more people.

Hi John,
Interesting post. I do a huge amount of RT's and post a lot. Some things get a lot of reaction, some don't. Your 'specific times' are interesting – I assume you mean Eastern time USA? You don't say. Just a tip for you and your readers – use GMT or UTC time when mentioning times online for the benefit of those of us in the rest of the world.
July 26th, 2010 at 4:54 pm
Glad you liked the post. Yes eastern time, since I am in Mass, USA.
