4 Ways You Can Treat Your Blog Like A Job

Blogging Tips To Blog As A Job

I think there are many bloggers new and established bloggers that still don’t see the work it takes to building a successful blog.

So I wanted to share some of my best blogging tips that most people can related to, which is “Work Your Blog Like A Job”. You see we have all had a job, so when someone tells you that job is hard, or I work hard at my job etc… We all have an idea of what the hard work means.

I know I know, having a blog is your way to live the internet lifestyle and to NOT have a job… and that is still all true, but taking some of your “Job” discipline will let you reach that goal much faster with your blog.blogging tips

Here Are My Blogging Tips To Build Your Blog As A Job…

Show Up Every Day On Time

It doesn’t matter if you post once a week or every day, it’s important to get on your blog every day. There is always something to work on like, new posts ideas, marketing – promos, social media, reading and learning.

If you promote a post correctly and are building your community on your blog, then the traffic and attention from that post will last a few days and keep you busy.

No one is born a great blogger, they all learned to blog and continue to learn to blog as blogging changes.

Walk Away – Take Time Off

A job comes with days off and your blog is no different.  While this may sound like it conflicts with the previous blogging tip, it doesn’t. Everyone needs time off.

Have you ever tried to do something and were stuck on something for an hour and couldn’t get it figured out, then you walk away from a min come back and it was like the fix was in front your eyes the whole time?

Taking time off gives you fresh eyes, new way of seeing something. You can apply this to your blog.

Don’t know what to write about?  Walk away and get inspired.

Taking time off  is a great way to get post ideas, some of my best ideas came from when I was no where near a computer.

This post – There is a New Blogging Star Born Every Day, Are You Next from me in my car on a sunny day banging my stereo to Jaz Z :)

Also when you take time off, you are setting your mind on a schedule, “I Work These Hours, I Rest These Hours”  this will help you not get burned out and quitting before you started.

When I started my blog, I was hitting it hard almost every hour I was awake haha  It was nuts.. but  for me, I have an addictive personality, so when I get into something I get a little crazy with it, which to a point is good, but it gets to be a negative very fast if not controlled.

I still work my blog hard, but I have focus on more then JUST the blog, so things are a little more scheduled now.  This has helped me have a life :)

Choose the days or times that you want to pull away and just relax, then do it and don’t feel guilty about the free time, In the end it will help you be a better blogger.

Your Blog Is Not A Game – So Don’t Play

If you start a blog, chances are it is to make money with it at some point. So if that is the case, then stop playing your blog as a hobby.

Stop focusing all your time on just writing posts.

Stop complaining that blogging is hard work.

Today 2010 a blog is a business, it is not just a blog anymore. You need to treat your blog as a business. The bloggers that see this and work their blogs hard like a business will see the success they are looking for.

Most people hate their jobs, but they still have to work. They are accountable to their bosses, to their co workers.

As a blogger you are accountable to only you, so to push yourself to work hard, tell people you started a blog, build relationships with other bloggers.

This will all help you be accountable to others and will be the little extra push to get you to get to work.

Think Big – Enjoy The Process

All bloggers start at the same place. The successful ones have put long hours over years to reach their success. You are no different.

Dream for that success but enjoy the process and small wins along the way.

Enjoy the new friendships you are making, enjoy the attention that great post got, enjoy the traffic your blog is getting!

Doesn’t matter what the small win is, enjoy it and build from it.

Good post John Paul. I abide by pretty much everything you say. I work the same hours, I work almost every day, but I try not switch on my computer on a Sunday, as I believe you need to switch your head off at least once a week.

    Hi John Paul,

Your last step would be my first.

All my difficulties with blogging arose when I didn’t enjoy blogging. I was worried, anxious, frustrated and thinking too damn small.

Think big! We’re here to achieve, and in a big way ;)

Super advice on scheduling. Work, play, rest. Work should be fun but also directed. Write, promote, network, innovate. Repeat the same steps tomorrow.

Thanks for sharing and have a powerful day!

    Ryan

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

I agree that Sunday is a good day to just shut down. You have to find a balance.

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

You got to have fun with your blog,, just because your working hard doesn’t mean it cant be fun.. that is what makes having a blog business the best job. The work is not hard, it just takes time and should be a fun process.

  • http://www.theemotionmachine.com Steven

I treat my blog as a job, but I treat it as a fun job because fun keeps me motivated and passionate. However, all fun with no discipline is a recipe for disaster. You’re right that more people need to take their blogging more seriously as a profession.

    Hey JP,

You are correct about ‘A blog not being a game!”

A lot of my inspiration comes from reading and learning. Treat this like a business and it will generate income for anyone. My friend, there is so much more money in working with offline businesses. If it wasn’t for my blog. I won’t be doing what I’m doing now.

I even have to say, Thank you to you because I’ve learned a lot from this blog. :)

    Have a wonderful Happy Thanksgiving!
    Josh

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Steven I am with you on that.. if blogging wasn’t fun, I wouldn’t do ti no more. You can work your blog hard and still be having fun. Blogging is awesome like that.. the hard work can be fun. the relationships can be fun.

But you are right also that all play with no discipline is a fast way to fail.. you have to find the balance.

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Yea I agree.. offline “traditional” business’s are where the gold is at. I’m slowly working my way into that.. working on a radio ad.

Your blog is home base for them to see,, hey Josh knows his shit.. we need to work together.. that is the power of a well maintained blog.

I Appreciate that Josh.. I’m glad the blog has helped :)

  • http://www.weeworldwonder.blogspot.com Allison

This is one of those epic posts that could end up positively influencing the attitdude and reputation of the blogging community. When I get discouraged or frustrated it pays to remember that it’s hard work for everyone who attempts it.

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Allison.. TY for that.. I’m glad you like the post :)

Never get discouraged.. the same trials and tribs you are going thru, I went thru and every top blogger has gone thru too.

But this is what makes you that successful blogger,, if it was easy, then reaching that success wouldn’t be as sweet.

  • http://twitter.com/ElisesReview Elise M

Hi John, I think the last point you made is the most important. Enjoy it! I definitely try to show up every day but there has been the random day or two when I just can’t make it happen due to stupid life things. Thanks a lot for the sound advice :)

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Elise… TY for the comment. Hey life happens for everyone.those are things can not be helped. So putting the blog on pause for a day for family and personal things is just fine.

But when you are free, hit that blog hard and have fun with it. Like I mentioned in a comment below.. If blogging wasn’t fur for me. I would sell my blog. I do it because I like the challenge and it is fun.

  • http://www.lifesgreatescape.net Alyx Falkner

I like this post John. I was just sitting around thinking of ways that I can bridge the gap from just writing to actually earning a stream of income from my blog in the future. I think it is very important to take blogging seriously if I want others to take what I write about as serious stuff.

Hey thanks man. Always enjoy your work!

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

eXACTLY,, IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO TAKE YOU AND YOUR BLOG SERIOUSLY, THEN YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR BLOG SERIOUS.

tHANKS MAN.. gLAD YOU LIKE THE POSTS :)

  • http://www.extremejohn.com/ Extreme John

Showing up on time is the biggest, and obviously it is also one of the weakest areas for all new bloggers. It becomes a challenge to miss that show on TV or get up off the couch, etc. Need to stay focused and get to work.

Off to the couch I go. ;)

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

I agree.. Im a big procrastinator.. blogging has def forced me to tightin that up a lil bit.

For me.. I keep the TV off till about 4.. that way it doesnt distract me, since I distract easy haha

  • http://thefriendlyblogger.com Lisa

Love it John! I am learning to appreciate the small wins along the way. Pateince is key in this business, for me anyway. It can be overwhelming and disappointing at times, but learning to build on the small successes will take us to the bigger ones!

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

That is it.. celebrate the small wins on your way to the big wins.. best way to stay motivated and not get burned out as a new blogger.

Excellent post John, being a successful blogger means to move from the hobby approach to job approach. To write regularly but at the same time to be able to take a rest in the right time is very important.

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Adam..TY for the comment. Yea. you def have to take that time away to relax you head. Keeps you from burning out long term.

Really great posting. I especially liked your thoughts on how to manage a bloggers schedule allowing “on” time versus off time! Thanks for sharing!Michael

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Glad you liked the post Michael.

Can you ONLY use your name next please.. keeps the community clean.. Thanks.

  • http://twitter.com/ThrowingaBrick Roy Scribner

So true, John – the thing that really killed me when I first started, was that I was always tweaking my theme design and playing with new widgets. Those are huge distractions, that are not particularly productive, because they distract you from your “job” – writing!

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

I was the same way when I started. Tweaking the theme and testing 100 plugins lol. But you quickly realize all that is busy work, not productive.

The real job is writing,, but it continues to marketing and promoting.

  • http://www.onlypapertowelholders.com/ Nathan

Since I’m not really accountable to anyone other than myself, it is difficult to make myself do the things that I really hate doing. I’d much rather tweak my design or research ways to drive traffic than write posts. Unfortunately, tweaking and researching don’t produce profits!

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

I agree Nathan.. tweaking design and researching dont make the money,, but that do have their importance.. I spent to much time playing with my design in the beginning to,, but you have to just get to the point and say its fine, and move on.

John let me first say this was very good, much information. The sad part about this is that it is all true and the people I live around think blogging is a waste of time. Small minded as they are, they think I spend to much time here promoting, writing, marketing, etc…they think it’s a joke. The only one’s who really appreciate it are online. Probably why I get discouraged at times about the way it is going. thanks.

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

TY for your comment. Im glad the post was helpful.

Yea most people offline have no idea what blogging really is.. so don’t let them get you down.

Stay focused and keep at it.,.. one day they will be asking you to help them blog :)

Oh next time you comment.. please ONLY use your real name.. Thanks :)

Most important point on your list: Enjoy the Process! When people complain that they don’t have time to blog, I recommend shifting their perspective. I feel fortunate that I GET to write each day. When I realized it wasn’t just something I had to do, but something I wanted to do, I think my writing got better and everything just fell into place.

  • http://onlineincometeacher.com/ Matt Smith

Nice post John!  Getting a good balence between working hard on my site regularly and taking time off to relax has helped my site grow, and prevented me from going blogging crazy!

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Stephanie.. I agree 100% This is why I tell newbie bloggers to make sure their first blog is about something they already enjoy. It makes it much easier to write post son things you enjoy and already know about.

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

haha yea blogging crazy happens to all of us in the beginning. We think we cant take a few hours away from the blog or it will fail lol I worked thru this..and now have a nice balance that keeps me sane and the blog moving forward.

  • http://twitter.com/backngroovemom rachel h blaufeld

John  - I like what you say about ‘walk away and get inspired’ …so true!! Sometimes a dog walk is the best inspiration for me! Rachel

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Rachel.. Thank U for the comment. Yea that has worked well for me. Going for a ride.. playing with nephews, even watching tv has sparked new ideas.

  • Laine D.

So true JP … of course its
difficult when you already have a full time job! Or 2 like me…(social media plus single parent of 2), in which case you have to show up and action but with the same enthusiasm as IF you were full time!Laine

  • http://www.johnpaulaguiar.com John Paul

Treating it like a job is more about the mentality. Since people have to work their jobs, they have to be committed. This post is about bringing that same commitment to your blog, but not to actually work it 40 hrs a week :)

But I agree, with “real” life and social media and a blog it is hard to find the time.
