It has been 2 weeks since I officially launched Twitter Dummy Guide, so I wanted to share my results and also some things I learned from my first product launch.

This was my first product launch, and I have to say it opened my eyes to a few things.

1-Launching a product is HARD and takes A LOT of work. I mean I’m not expert at launching a product, but I did spend about a month reading as much as I could on the topic.

2-The blogging community is awesome and showed great support for a up start blogger like me.

Let’s talk about the hard work, here is just a few things I did to promote Twitter Dummy..

1-Press release sent to about 100 websites.

2-Article sent to about 200 websites.

3-Submitted Twitter Dummy Sales page to over 200 directories.

4-Wrote a sales page

5-Finished ebook and worked on banner ads for affiliates

6-Setup affiliate system for Twitter Dummy

7-Contacted bloggers and marketers to get a JV partnership.

8-Wrote 2 posts to build buzz around twitter marketing

9-Drank more coffee then I thought I ever could :)

That is a small list of everything I did leading up to and thru out the launch.

Blogging Community Support

Let me start by saying not all bloggers were interested or even liked the guide. But that’s ok, the fact that they answered my email and were nice enough to congratulate me and wish me luck in my launch was pretty damn cool.

Having people that are #1 in the world like ShoeMoney, Darren Rowse, Chris Brogan to reply to my email directly.. and show support was a BIG eye opener. What I will say is work on the email you initially send, I think that is why I had such a great response from people I reached out to.

Bloggers That Were A Big Help

First was Kevin Muldoon at BloggingTips.com  Kevin did a nice Twitter Dummy Review

I have to say Kevin was awesome, answered my questions and even offered me a guest posting slot on BloggingTips.com, Just a str8 up nice guy!

image

Next was Tyler Cruz at TylerCruz.com  Tyler did a Twitter Dummy Giveaway Contest  connected to his Twitter account, very cool idea. Again another really nice guy that was a great help.

image

Then we have Robb Sutton at RobbSutton.com  Robb wrote I think the BEST Product Review I ever read..lol  After reading it I was like “Damn I’m Awesome” lol

Robb was a great help and again another nice guy that answered all my questions.

Like I said earlier, not all bloggers replied or were willing to promote Twitter Dummy for their own reasons.

But a nice side benefit  was even though some said no to promoting Twitter Dummy, some did offer me guest post opportunities, and some just acknowledged that they knew who I was and about my blog, from the comments I have left on their blog over past few months.

So that is proof that your “Quality” comments on other blogs do get you noticed.

How Did Twitter Dummy Do

So far I have made 4 sales before the launch and 53 sales after, about 30% of that from a few affiliates.

Now I don’t know how good or bad that is compared to most product launches, but I know for the time and work I have put in I am happy with the results so far, since I don’t have a big list to sell to, my blog is growing but I don’t have 10,000 subscribers to sell to, all I had was hard work and a few blogger relationships to help.

For anyone thinking about launching their own product I say DON’T lol  it’s hard work.

Now if your ok with hard work, long hours, no sleep, then go for it.

In the end you will have your own product to sell for life and no one can take that away from you.

Ok I don’t have 1 million followers, I wish I did!  The point is once you have a lot of followers, what do you do with them.

So what I did was I set up a experiment between 2 of my Twitter accounts over 2 months just to show how different the experience between a account that your interact with and build a community with, and a account that you just post to and don’t interact with. twitter community, twitter, twitter dummy, johnpaulaguiar.com

I wanted to show that a twitter account with any amount of followers, 200, 100, 10,000 or even 1 million won’t mean shit to you and your blog if you don’t connect with them and build a community around your twitter account.

In This Corner…

One account was my main account @JohnAguiar that I am “personal” on everyday interacting, the other account we will call it @Test

At the time of my experiment @JohnAguiar had over 35,000 followers and @Test had over 9,000 followers.

Test Started

So here what I did os I used my @JohnAguiar account like I normally do, interacting, responding, building relationships and basically strengthening the connection with my blog and my twitter account.

Now with my @Test account all I really did was post information and some of my blog posts, but I never did any #FF, or really reply to any Dm’s or any @replies.  It wasn’t set as a auto posting account, they knew I was there posting daily.

Results Are In

What I had with my @JohnAguiar account was a constant flow of @reply conversations and DM’ conversations and a healthy amount of RT’s of my posts.

Each and everyday their was activity and conversation on my twitter account and I admit I spend more time on twitter then I think is healthy..lol

But I guess that’s a good thing,  if I wasn’t growing my community correctly then I wouldn’t have a reason to be on..right?

Now for my @Test account, there was pretty much no @replies or DM’s and a small amount of RT’s.

So even if you do have a million followers, if you are not interacting and building that twitter community then you are wasting your time.

I’m sure by now you know how important it is to bring your blogging and online business to Twitter, and if you don’t then you are not interested in building your blog or business.

Now before I go any further, the one thing you NEED to know from the beginning is…

“You Will Lose Followers On Twitter No Matter How Nice, Polite, or Perfect You Use Twitter”!

Like Guy Kawasaki says: “If your not making people mad on twitter then your not using twitter correctly” twitter, twitter followers, how to get more followers, twitter dummy

What I mean is that people on twitter are sensitive, they follow and un-follow quickly.

It can be just one tweet you make that rubs them wrong, they will un-follow you.

Example:  Last week I made a tweet about a story about Obama visiting somewhere, and I said “the prez is slumming it..lol”   Now I had the “LOL” in there so people knew I was joking, I’m a sarcastic guy :)

Yet I had someone that lives in CANADA..lol  @me and complain that I was rude and blah blah.  Understand this person lives in CANADA, yet was mad and he missed that I was joking.

So once you understand that you can not make everyone happy and some people will un-follow you then you can move on with using twitter to build your blog or business.

1 To 36,000 Really

Yes I’m happy with my followers, and have made a lot great connections, and friendships in that 36,000 and I have sent a lot of them to my blog.

You see on twitter it really isn’t that hard to get followers, but what is hard is knowing how to keep them long term.

Here are a few things I do that keep my followers happy and growing…

Do Not Automate Every Part Of Twitter!

I schedule a few tweets thru the day because that lets me share more, but I am also there in person thru the day reading and replying, to get most out of twitter you need to be there.

Yes I automate DM’s and I auto follow people, why? For one automating DM’s is just smart and efficient..Period!

Why do I auto follow? Because I don’t think I am so amazing or that I am any better or more important then anyone else on twitter, if they follow me, I follow them, if they spam me then I drop them :)

I have learned new things from top bloggers and marketers on twitter, but I have also learned things from people with less then 100 followers, so stay open.

I Tweet The Same Tweet More Then Once!

I do this mainly for my blog posts, and why?  It’s simple, my followers are from all over the world all in different time zones.

If I post something at 9am a big part my followers won’t see it, or some people are not on twitter at 9am some are on at 6pm after work, some on at 11pm once the family is asleep.

So for me to reach as many of my followers as I can I post my blog posts every 3-4 hrs.

Here’s a little secret, do you know the best time my posts get RT’d the most?  11 pm.  Shhhhh don’t tell anyone :)

Build A Community In Twitter

If you know Chris Brogan, then you know he is all about community and twitter is no different.

Best way to do this is interact with people, reply to tweets, answer questions, share a “little” about your life and participate in follow Friday.

Here’s what I do, if some RT’s any of your tweets whether it be your own post, or news article, thanks them as soon as you can, and sometimes this turns into a nice conversation, which is what you want to do on twitter.

On #Ff I follow Friday to anyone in that week that has RT’d my posts or has sent me a nice reply or DM or that has #ff me. This is a nice way to thank people again for RTing your tweets or any nice compliments they gave you.

This builds a friendship, benefits them cause your sharing their name with your followers and hopefully they will RT more in the future.

There you go! Now you have a few things that I do that work for me that got me to 36,000 in less then 8 months, and that helps me keep them around.

What do you think of my tips?  You have any to share?
